The Funny Side of Getting Older: A Dolly Mama Story

Dolly Mama illustration — "If we get caught… you're deaf and I don't speak English."

I have absolutely no filter.

Actually...that's not true.

I have a filter…and it’s clogged.

Sometimes I'll say something and think, "That was funny."

Other times, my mouth goes rogue.

It's genetic.

Apparently, I inherited CFD—Chronic Filter Deficiency.

My family tree doesn't branch...it blurts.

I always blamed my dad's side of the family...

Until my mom proved she had it too.

It was the early 1980s, and my mom and her best friend, Meredith, were waiting for a parking spot at Bloomingdale's, which…between you and me, with the amount of money they spent there, they should have had their own reserved space.

Anyhoooo….Finally, a spot opened up.

And another woman swooped in and took it.

After the initial shock wore off, they plotted their imaginary revenge.

Just before they got out of the car, Meredith looked at my mom and said...

"If we get caught...you're deaf and I don't speak English."

Years later, I remembered that little parking lot moment...and it became one of my best-selling Dolly Mamas.

Maybe that's why I've always loved humor. Some of the funniest things aren't scripted. They just slip out before your brain has a chance to stop them.

I don't know if it's my age...

Lack of hormones...

Or that I’m done apologizing for who I am.

But I've decided this should be one of the benefits of getting older.

Forget senior discounts.

Forget early bird specials.

I want to be grandfathered in...to the days when a joke was just a joke.

I think we've earned that.

Seriously, when did my mouth need to ask my brain for legal advice?

Plus…at our age, if we stop to think about it first, we'll probably forget what we were going to say anyway.

So let your freaky filter fly.

And if that backfires...

You're deaf.

And I don't speak English.

❤️ Joey
